Making a Difference
in the Community
Teens in the Redmond Youth Partnership Advisory Committee (RYPAC) are stepping up to help the homeless population in our area. Working with the Congregation for the Homeless and Sophia's Way they have provided meals for many of the program participants. The teens gather and make the food from scratch. "Cooking from scratch was an eye opening activity since I didn't even know how to cut most of the vegetables to begin with! Oh, and the chicken, that was my first time cutting chicken and I have to say I was proud! Overall, I think the most important thing I learned was the importance of time and how only a couple of hours can make such a difference in someone else's life." said Deesha, Junior at Redmond High School.
The teens have made baked chicken, salad, lasagna, vegetarian spaghetti, curry chicken, and many other dishes all from scratch. The meals are prepared by youth and a few parents who come down and help. "As the brownie maker and server I must say that the only thing better than eating the leftover brownie dough is seeing the homeless peoples faces light up and fill with gratitude when I slide a brownie onto their plate." said Braden, 7th grader at Redmond Junior High. "At first I was just volunteering, trying to make a small contribution to the city, but once I got home and thought about the accomplishments I had towards the event, I figured that our involvement was really significant, one that was able to help those in need and see a noteworthy change towards the future." said Alice, Junior at Redmond High School.
If you want to develop and support programs for the community and you are in junior high or high school student here in Redmond or live in Redmond you can be a part of RYPAC. The meetings are twice a month the first and third Thursdays from 6:30pm -8pm.
