Commitment to Our Future
In spring 2001, the feature article in Focus on Redmond introduced Redmond's vision for the future and asked the question – "What will it be like to live and work in Redmond in 2010 and 2020?"
At that time the City was undertaking a major update of its Comprehensive Plan and developing a Transportation Master Plan to prepare for future growth and change. Today, the City is updating both plans – extending the timeline to 2030 and strengthening sustainability concepts – and we thought this a perfect opportunity to reflect on implementation of the plans during the past 10 years and what will shift as we incorporate the knowledge we've gained over the past decade and plan for the next 20 years – to 2030.
The overarching theme for the 2010-2011 updates is that of sustainability, defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As Redmond moves towards the future, the way in which we plan for economic vitality, environmental health and social needs will help our community to grow more sustainably.
