Outstanding Senior Volunteers Honored

Each year in May, as part of the nation-wide Older Americans’ Month celebration, two special volunteers are chosen by the Senior Advisory Committee to receive recognition for their outstanding volunteer service. In addition, a community agency, service or business is chosen for recognition.

At the City Council meeting on May 5, Mayor John Marchione proclaimed May as Redmond Senior Recognition Month and the individuals selected for recognition received certificates. A reception was also held at the Redmond Senior Center (RSC) on Friday, May 4 to honor the recipients.

This year the special seniors who received the Outstanding Volunteer Service award were Martha Olson and Joy Littlefield. The organization chosen to be honored was the Sophisticated Swing Big Band.

Joy Littlefield
Joy’s family and friends all agree that her life revolves around helping others. Lovingly described as “the head of the band groupies”, Joy has supported the Sophisticated Swing Big Band since it began as the Swingin’ Seniors many years ago. She has baked countless batches of cookies and acts as the door hostess at monthly dances. She posts flyers and promotes their every appearance any way she can. She even assists some members with transportation.

Joy has a life long history of giving to her community. She worked at the Eastside YMCA for many years and was honored with a national award for her work with the Parent and Child Indian Guide program. Joy’s loving dedication to others makes her extremely deserving of the Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award.

Martha Olson
Martha always has a smile and a kind word for everyone she meets. Her positive attitude and willingness to share her time and energy make her an indispensible asset to the RSC.
Martha volunteers twice a week at the RSC as a Beverage Bar hostess and, as a retired nurse, she also provides courtesy blood pressure checks on Thursdays. She also comes in as a substitute when other volunteers are not available and always volunteers when extra help is needed at special events.

Martha’s unstoppable determination to live life to its fullest makes her most deserving of the Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award.

Sophisticated Swing Big Band

Originally started by Walt and Helen Kittler as the Swingin’ Seniors, the Sophisticated Swing Big Band has been the musical standard at the RSC for almost 20 years. This 18 piece swing & jazz band plays all the old favorites from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s in the style of the famous big bands such as Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. The band has a strong following of dancers and listeners who turn out to enjoy their music at monthly dances and regular practice sessions. The band has been responsible for many a romance at the RSC. The band also shares their talents at various community events such as Holiday Ferry Concerts and other community appearances. Many of the members participate in several other bands in the area as well. The Sophisticated Swing Big Band is an outstanding example of seniors helping seniors and is much deserving of this award.
