Summer in Redmond

Summer in the Pacific Northwest has many virtues. The climate is mild, not too hot or humid, and there are very few biting insects to spoil outdoor fun. The long, lingering, pleasant evenings combine with natural beauty and local amenities, to make the Puget Sound area a perfect place to take a vacation. So it makes sense, with the economy not yet recovered, that Redmond residents might want to enjoy an inexpensive vacation or “staycation” (as the media has coined) right here at home.

Derby Days Summer Festival
Saturday July 11 – 10am to 10pm
Redmond City Hall 15670 NE 85th Street
More Info

Redmond Derby Days Summer Festival is a summer tradition that came to life at the end of the Depression. It began as a bicycle race around Lake Sammamish and is now a full day of festivities including a parade, carnival rides, music and entertainment, food vendors, beer and wine garden and the nation's longest running bicycle race.

Redmond Medical Center Derby Days Parade
This year the two traditional parades have combined into one – the Redmond Medical Center Derby Days Parade.  The children will still choose from one of the costume categories to decorate their bikes, wagons, strollers, skateboards, scooters, blades or self to add to the festivities. Every child who participates in the parade and wears a helmet will receive two dollars courtesy of Clark, Raymond and Company and Kempf and Company.  Interspersed amongst the decorated children will be drill teams, bands and other fun parade entries.

Friday Night Live
Friday, July 10 – 6 to 10pm

Friday Night Live is a new addition to this year's Derby Days.  The City Hall campus will come alive with the sounds of rock and roll.  A beer and wine garden with food will provide a great spot for both people and band watching.

The head-line act is the Beatniks, a favorite party band in the area (and around the world).  They perform the music of the 60s and 70s (80s, too) with energy and passion. Capturing the essence of the music with their charisma, chemistry and natural talent, they have played over 5000 shows since their debut in the early 90s.

Beginning at 6pm, Universal Soul, the winner of the Old Firehouse Teen Center Classic Rockathon, will entertain the crowd.  This hip-hop group broke out of the expected hip-hop mold performing “The Trial” from Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” to win the competition.  They are the next up and coming band out of the Pacific Northwest.
